The mission of the
Department of Infectious Diseases and Pathology is to acquire, advance, and disseminate knowledge in the fields of
parasitology, pathology, microbiology, immunology,
epidemiology, and other disciplines that will help identify, control and prevent animal
disease and/or contribute to public health. The Department pursues this mission
through its teaching, research, and service activities at the state, national,
and international levels.

Teaching
Department faculty teach in the DVM professional curriculum, at the graduate level in areas of study leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees and through its residency training program in anatomical pathology.
Research
The Department develops and maintains research programs that acquire and disseminate knowledge on the cause and pathogenesis of disease and on basic and applied strategies for prevention and control of diseases of importance in animals and/or of importance to man. The Department has a long-standing research program of excellence focused on emerging infectious diseases.
Service
The Department offers services through laboratories in clinical microbiology and parasitology, necropsy pathology, and surgical pathology. These laboratories provide services to clinicians and clients in the Veterinary Medical Center as well as to veterinarians throughout the State of Florida. Faculty provide expertise to numerous state, national, and international agencies, professional societies, editorial and advisory boards, and scientific granting organizations.
